Ted Gehring with Gov. Walz

This past school year, the 6th grade yellow team at St. Francis Middle School set out on a mission to not only claim the coveted 6th grade civics traveling trophy, but also collect signatures from every living former Lieutenant Governor and Governor of Minnesota.

As the civics unit kicked off, all 300 sixth graders dove into a friendly but fierce competition. Determined to master the material, every student committed to revising their assignments until they scored 100% on every single one.

When the final test scores came in, the blue team narrowly edged out the victory, winning the trophy - a championship belt - with an impressive average of 89.9% compared to the yellow team's 89.1%. While the yellow team graciously handed over the belt, their journey didn’t end there.

Over the course of the year, yellow team students reached out to former state leaders and successfully gathered signatures from four former Lieutenant Governors. Their efforts paid off in a big way when, on May 8, they secured Governor Walz’s signature during a visit to the Capitol.

Their journey has been documented through photos and videos, which can be found under the hashtag #signthehistorybelt on Facebook.
