This year a student council was formed at Crossroads East, which is a school located within Nexus-East Bethel Family Healing residential facility, and on May 2, 15 students participated in an event they typically wouldn’t be able to experience - Prom.
“Establishing a student council was significant as it provided young individuals with opportunities to enhance their student experiences and take ownership of the program's growth,” said Bridget Brown, a Student Services Program Supervisor at St. Francis Area Schools who oversees Crossroads East.
“The concept of a prom emerged from the understanding that students at Crossroads East might not typically fit the mold of candidates for a student council at a traditional high school. We aimed to enable these youth to engage in a meaningful experience as vital stakeholders in our school community.”
The Prom's success was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Crossroads East staff and the student council members. Nexus-East Bethel assisted with decorations and provided lunch for the students, while community partners generously donated prom dresses. View photos of the Prom setup and the staff.
“The reception of the prom was overwhelmingly positive,” Brown said. “Students at Crossroads East were ecstatic, enjoying the fruits of their hard work as they danced and celebrated. Witnessing their joy was an emotional experience, highlighting their pride in the event's success.”
Student Council members talk about the Prom:
"I tried hard to do things that everyone would enjoy. Even with limited materials, I tried my best to make it fun for everyone."
"I am very very very excited and I feel like all of the hard work was worth it! I am so excited for the dance!"
"I am excited about the dance because almost everyone gets to be there and we get to have a fun time and be together. I am very proud of the hard work that was put into getting the dance set up!"
