American Indian Education Parent Advisory Committee (AIEPAC) questionnaire for the School Board Candidate

1. What is your knowledge about American Indian Education?

I unfortunately do not have a ton of knowledge about American Indian education. Since joining the school board on an interim basis, I have learned that we have the American Indian Education Parent Advisory Committee and I am interested in attending your meetings so that I can learn more and partner better with the AIEPAC.

2. What do you know about American Indian cultures?

Very little but I’d love to know more. My grandfather, that I never had the opportunity to meet, he unfortunately passed away just before I was born, was a full blood American Indian, I am embarrassed to admit that I don’t know enough about my history or culture but am excited about the opportunity to connect with this group and learn more.

3. Have you ever attended a Pow Wow or a Native event?

I have not but I’d love for you all to include/invite me, where appropriate, so that I can learn more about your events.

4. Have you ever attended American Indian- specific training or professional development?

I have not but if there are opportunities that you can recommend, I would be interested in doing so!

5. Do you think the district should invest more resources in American Indian Education, since American Indian kids typically perform worse in public schools?

Yes, if that would help. I would love to discuss more about this outcome to see if there are other opportunities to help the American Indian student population.

6. What do you know about academic achievement gaps affecting American Indian students?

I am uneducated about this beyond what I’ve read in trying to gain education around this. I would love if someone would take the time to help me understand this better within what we see in St. Francis Area Schools.

7. Are you familiar with historical trauma involving the American Indian population?

A very small amount and only through self-education. My best friend went through an adoption of 3 American Indian siblings and through that process I learned a lot about American Indian culture, historical trauma as well as the Indian Child Welfare Act and why that is in place.
