Students and staff at St. Francis Area Schools are excited to announce the third annual Victory Garden Planting Day at Crossroads School & Vocational Center on Wednesday, May 23, 9:30-10:30 a.m. The event will begin with speakers at 9:30 a.m. followed by students, staff and mentors transferring bedding plants grown this school year into soil.
Speakers include Jay Powell, principal, Sonni Buerskin, Special Services program supervisor, Lynne Hagen, University of Minnesota Extension, Master Gardener Program Coordinator from Anoka County, Gayle Boswell, Anoka County Extension Master Gardener and a Crossroads School & Vocational Center student.
The Victory Garden Planting Day is a part of Crossroads School & Vocational Center's (CSVC) curriculum to reach at-risk youth through hands-on education strategies in partnership with the University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardeners. CSVC teachers and Master Gardeners spoke at the Schoolyard Garden Conference on March 2 on their success of reaching at-risk youth in understanding agricultural concepts, such as hydroponics, through their mentorship program. CSVC's Victory Garden successful program has been featured in the Fall 2017 issue of Source and the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture newsletter.
